Girls Night Out

So, Saturday I went to a concert by a famous Mozambican singer, Stuart Sukuma. It was held at Zoom, a disco here that many of my students frequent. Usually I don't like to party and drink-it-up with my students, but this was a special occasion.

Tracy and Sojourner (Sojo) were going to spend the night at my place so they met me at my house and then we went to Lynne's for a drink beforehand. She greeted us with fresh kettle corn, piri piri pretzels, and vodka tonics. I brought a newly designed bottle of ice cold sangria from Don Simon (PC MOZ folks might remember this stuff. It used to be sold in a box). Lynne's friend, Sara, also came over.

We had some good conversation and laughs. We talked about which fake names we would give to people at the club. My name was to be Voda (after Vodacom, a cellphone provider here). There was also Sparletta (after a soft drink), and Banco Austral (a bank here).

The concert was supposed to start at 10. We got there at 11:15. And the guy finally sang at 2. We didn't mind, though. It was nice to dance.

It was interesting to watch the homoerotic dancing by some men in the club, though--many of them were my students. I went to a party at the University once and fond it extremely cute to see all my male students dancing together in a circle or dancing by themselves but near each other and feeding off each others' energy. Zoom took it to another level, though. There was hip thrusting, puzzle-like configurations with legs and more hip thrusting. There was also that fake spanking move all of us have done at one time or another. I just watched in awe as they had fun with each other totally unaware of the connotations of their actions to me as an American. My students also seemed to take great pleasure in watching Doctora Akisha dance as well.
