Happy to be in Mozambique

THE BEACH

This weekend I had the great opportunity to go on some pretty walks with another English teacher here, Wendy. She is a British VSO volunteer-kinda like Peace Corps.

On Saturday we went to Tofo beach. Absolutely beautiful if you don't look at the damaged caused by winds that showed up after the cyclone in Madagascar. The woman we talked about said the tides are much stronger now because of the Equinox. I don't know what that means but I saw the damage. Huge chunks of beach were just missing and the woman I talked to, who works at a diving school, was in the process of helping stack sacks of sand and build up the side of the building before it fell off the hill onto the beach. Folks were trying (hopefully not in vain but It didn't look that stable...) to build small walls around their property to keep the water out also. We took a hike on the side that wasn't affected so much but saw huge surfing waves and lots of clean white sand.

On Sunday we tried to time it so that we could walk across the bay (of Inhambane) at low tide. We almost had it. We walked a ways out and had to take a Dhow (old sail boat) for a few minutes before he got stuck in the sand and low water and had to trek it again. We ended up walking through the village of Mukukuni and being greeted happily by everyone hanging outside of their hot houses on a Sunday morning. One of the best moments was the hello we got from a little girl we unknowingly walked under as she was picking fruit from the tree. She said, "Good Afternoon! How ARE you two?" I tried to add the happy intonation but I can't do what I heard any justice writing it down.
