Blogging in Mozambique

So, I started a unit on Blogs and Podcasts with my Tourism 2 class.  They are very excited (sometimes I think it is more so that they can make their own personal blog), but they are excited in any case.

It is not shocking that this is not an easy task, though.  The internet at the school is on and off.  The computer lab doesn't have many computers that work, and many of them are plagued with viruses.

To stay true to our theme for this year, "Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can," by Arthur Ashe, I decided to use printouts of blogs for the students to examine.  I brought my color printer with me so they looked really nice.

The students grouped up and answered questions to expand their awareness of what a blog is, what other people around the world use them for, what they might design a blog for, and how blogging might be useful for the development of tourism in Mozambique.

Their next task is to design entries for a test-blog I have set up called "Tourism 2 Online" at
It is empty right now but in the next month or so they should start putting up some posts.  Be on the lookout and learn some Mozambican culture, sports, history, food, and more through the eyes of some very bright university students.
